Mucinex Maximum Strength Expectorant Guaifenesin, 14 Count Review

I have dealt with congestion, both pulmonary and sinus, for many years. Back in the day, I could get plain guaifenesin by prescription, but Mucinex is a fine substitute. Pricey, true, but so worth it to keep secretions thin so I am able to get rid of them. For me, it thins sinus congestion equally as well as chest, so that sinuses are able to drain and relieve the inevitable headache. This is the best price per tablet that I have found to date, and I will continue to purchase from Amazon.

I also have chronic sinus issues (sinusitis, etc). When I saw that Zicam, a brand known for touting it's "homeopathic" products, was making a congestion relief spray I was very optimistic. Long ago I learned that the Afrin-type nasal sprays were bad for you, because of the rebound effect they cause. Many people get terrribly addicted to these sprays because when the effect wears off the chemical ingredient leaves your nasal passages even more swollen then they were before you took it. Which, of course, makes you keep reaching for the bottle again and again. But I assumed (and you know what happens when you assume...) that if this spray was from Zicam then it must be ok. I started taking this spray with my current sinus infection, and it works great at first. But then I've noticed that my congestion got to be so bad that even my prescription medications which normally work wonders were not effective. Then I did a Google search on the active ingredient in the Zicam Extreme Congestion spray (Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride)...turns out it is the exact same ingredient as Afrin and all the rest. Bad news, stay away from it. Do yourself a favor and do not use this product. If you absolutely have to use it, read the instructions very carefully...it says do not use the product for more than 3 days. This is really important, if you overuse it you can easily become addicted. You're better off just not touching the stuff to begin with...

I've been trying all sorts of decongestant tablets, acetaminophen, prescription and OTC nasal sprays and nothing was getting rid of my debilitating sinus pain. The headaches around my nose and eyes were wrecking me.
Then I saw this product in the organic / homeopathic section of a local grocery store and decided to try it. I am absolutely amazed and would highly recommend to anyone having trouble finding relief from sinus pain.

I have used extended release guaifenesin (the active drug in Mucinex) for many years to help with sinus drainage and chronic bronchitis. It really works to clear out the lungs and my MD tells me it helps reduce sinus drainage as well. I stocked up on the prescription form of guaifenesin just before the FDA pulled all extended release guaifenesin from the market except for Mucinex. The reason for this action was somewhat esoteric and it allowed Mucinex to have a monopoly on the extended release form. Well, my horde of prescription guaifenesin finally ran out and I started using Mucinex. It works that same as the old prescription drugs because it is the same thing (they are both extended release guaifenesin). But, Mucinex is very expensive. So, I switched to immediate relase guaifenesin and found that it works just as well at a significant cost savings. The only thing is that you will have to take more immediate release tablets to equal a 12-hour extended release tablet. If you can't let go of the Mucinex, consider taking the immediate release during the day and Mucinex at night. You will save a lot of money. Mucinex is the only extended release tablet on the market. So, if it is guaifenesin and it is not Mucinex then it is an immediate release tablet. Check the price differences.
