Solaray - Red Yeast Rice Plus Coq-10, 60 capsules Review

Solaray - Red Yeast Rice Plus Coq-10, 60 capsules
Average Reviews:

I have always had trouble with my cholesterol and my family has a long history of heart problems. I did not want to take the medications on the market today. When my friend told me about this product and her cholesterol had dropped, I decided to try it and my doctor told me this would be my last chance to try an alternative method -- my cholesterol was 278!!!! I used it for 3 months twice a day and my cholesterol dropped to 199!! I was very, very happy. I haven't had any side effects, but I do go to my doctor and get blood work to make sure my liver functions are stable, and again, there has been no problems. I hope this helps others who struggle with high cholesterol.

Pantesin Pantethine 300 mg 60 Sgels Review

Pantesin Pantethine 300 mg 60 Sgels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was diagnosed and treated for heart disease when I was 34. Blood tests showed that while my cholesterol wasn't too bad, my triglycerides were extremely high. I was immediately prescriped Lipitor, an expensive drug that caused some uncomfortable side effects.
Within the space of three months I changed my diet and stopped taking the drug altogether. I reduced my sugar intake (a major factor) and eating foods with hydrogenated oils. I also began taking these specific pills, Pantesin Pantethine, one pill twice a day.
The end result was startling. Without a bit of exercise (which also drops triglyceride levels) I was able to beat the results of Lipitor. I started out at 260, Lipitor brought me down to 160, stopped taking the drug and changed my diet and began taking these pills and I was down to 100! I can't prove scientifically that these pills were the major factor (I take probably ten different supplements each day), but the evidence at least suggests that they had a definite positive influence.

New Chapter Cinnamonforce Review

New Chapter Cinnamonforce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You can make just about anything sound more powerful when you append Force to the end of it. CinnamonForce! MangoForce! CupcakeForce! It's kind of like adding the "Extreme" qualifier to a product name.
Anyway, there's really only one reason most people will bother to read a review of a bottle of supplements: they want to know if it works. Well, I'll get to that part, but first I'll go ahead and get all of that other stuff out of the way.
The Amazon product description is disconcerting to me. There's a summarized version of it on the bottle, too, but I don't care if it has been used since ancient times. I don't care if Columbus was looking for it, that doesn't mean it's a magical cure-all. I recently saw a show on one of the "nerd channels" that I adore so much (either History or Discovery, I can't remember now) that was talking about how ancient Romans loved to cook in lead pots because they liked the added "flavor" that the lead imparted on the food. So I'm not going to spend a lot of time considering ancient opinions of the mystical healing properties of cinnamon.
The 60-count capsules come in a glass bottle. It's a 30-day supply when following recommended use (one capsule each after your two largest meals of the day). The capsules themselves are tiny -- you could probably fit four of them on the head of a US dime, if that was something you were likely to try. They're black and shaped like a rugby ball. They actually look more like something that your college roommate's "friend" handed you that one time than any sort of herbal supplement. So maybe you won't want to have any of them loose in a plastic baggie the next time you go through airport security, but they sure do smell nice!
Contents. I'll give you three guesses, and the first two don't count. That's right, they contain cinnamon. More specifically, they contain cinnamon extract. Even MORE specifically, they contain a 140mg (per 2-capsule serving) "Proprietary Blend" of Cinnamon and Cinnamon (bark) 94mg hydroethanolic extract and 46mg supercritical extract. Based on what I could find (and understand), all of these words are a fancy way of saying "cinnamon extract". Please feel free to leave a comment on the review if my understanding of this is incorrect. Below that, there is a section called "Other Ingredients" which lists olive oil and yellow beeswax.
Let's talk price for a second. At the time of this review, a 60-count bottle of 70mg capsules is going for around twenty dollars. Compare with Natrol 80-count Cinnamon Extract 500mg Capsules at under four dollars a bottle. That's a huge difference, especially considering you get an extra 20 capsules and each one is more than 700% as potent as these. There's no magic elixir in here, folks. It's cinnamon extract in a pill.
So now we get to the real question: Do they work? The short answer is, I don't know. Maybe I'm cynical by nature, but if I try a product that promises something, I want to be able to see a difference. And I'm not seeing a difference here. So let's talk about the claims on the bottle (notice the asterisks):
Use as part of your diet to promote healthy weight management*
Promotes normal blood lipid profiles*
Helps maintain blood sugar already in normal range*
Quick aside: Once I looked at the package of a "whitening" chewing gum. Seeing the dreaded asterisk next to the claims of tooth whitening abilities, I read the fine print. To summarize, the fine print said that the gum is "whitening", in that the act of chewing gum makes it more difficult for stains to adhere to the teeth. What they were saying in that fine print (in not so many words) was that there was no actual whitening compound in the gum! But the act of chewing the gum (or ANY gum, "whitening" or not) made stains less likely to appear over time. I was flabbergasted! I mean, it made sense that they couldn't put a whitening compound in gum because whatever they put in it would end up in your body as you chewed it, but it really made me think about product claims like that.
Okay, sorry about the digression. But I feel it applies here -- look at how these claims are worded. "Helps maintain blood sugar already in normal range" sounds like "if your blood sugar is normal, this will not change that." Well that doesn't sound like much of a benefit. You could say the same about water -- or nothing at all! Or how about "Use as part of your diet to promote healthy weight management"? Note it's not weight loss, but weight management. To me, that says that as long as you eat right, these pills will not cause you to gain weight. I won't get into the third one, because I'm not sure what "normal blood lipid profiles" are.
But you get my point. And each claim has the "These Statements Have Not Been Evaluated By the FDA" asterisks, which means that they can claim just about anything they want.
I have not used all of the pills in the bottle yet. And although there is no information regarding how long I should expect to take them before seeing any benefits, I will continue to take them for the 30 days. If at some point I do see a change that cannot be merely attributed to some placebo effect, I'll amend the review accordingly.
I do want to make it clear that I'm not dismissing these supplements out of hand. Maybe there is some science to it. I really don't know. If someone has any real data about the significant benefits of cinnamon from a true, unbiased source, please add a link in the comments to this review because I'd like to read it. I did some searches on the internet for more information, but every site that had information about cinnamon's health benefits was also selling cinnamon pills, and made all sorts of claims about their products ("Stop Aging Now!", etc.) that made them sound untrustworthy. Plus, some of them mention "recent studies" or "new research" that suggests all of these wild benefits, but not a single one of them provides a link to that data (that I could find, anyway).
But even if there is a benefit to it, aren't there a number of more cost effective ways of getting your dose of cinnamon?
Or cinnamon extract?

Thorne Research CholeastTM (Red Yeast Rice) -- 120 Vegetarian Capsules Review

Thorne Research CholeastTM (Red Yeast Rice) -- 120 Vegetarian Capsules
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thorne's Choleast is a wonderful product! My cholesterol index improved dramatically from the year before I started taking it, to the next year when the doctor checked it again! He wanted to know what I had done to change it....I told him Red Yeast Rice or "Choleast" with Q10...from Thorne Research. He said he didn't think that would make a difference...well, I told him I had not changed much else, and he needed to start believing in what he saw in the tests in front of him! I am a medical professional myself, and I can tell you others who have had dramatic improvement in their cholesterol taking this medication!! And I only take one pill a day, others have been taking two...it really works!

Nature's Plus - Red Yeast Rice Extended Released, 600 mg, 30 tablets Review

Nature's Plus - Red Yeast Rice Extended Released, 600 mg, 30 tablets
Average Reviews:

My cholesterol was at a high of 238. I tried eating nothing but grilled chicken, brown rice, and veges AND working out 2-3-4 times a week. It dropped down to 205. I heard about Red Yeast Rice through a Consumer Report. I've been taking it for about a year, not eating completely healthy foods, but my cholesterol dropped to a low of 174. I ran out for a couple months and my cholesterol went back up to 220+. I tried another brand and the level barely went down. I'm back on the Nature's Plus Extended Release and my cholesterol levels are on their way back DOWN. I'm a firm believer in this herb as produced by THIS company. Try it. Hopefully it works for you like it works for me. Remember, though, we're all genetically different.

Twinlab Niacin (B-3) 1000mg, 100 Capsules (Pack of 3) Review

Twinlab Niacin (B-3) 1000mg, 100 Capsules (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Niacin is better than prescription drugs for improving your HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio, and has far fewer serious side effects. This particular brand of niacin is probably no better or worse than any other brand, but the 1000 mg capsules are more convenient than taking numerous smaller capsules.
Yes, flushing can be a very annoying side effect with large doses of niacin but it is not life or health threatening and it can be managed. Here are the steps, in order of importance, to control flushing:
1. Make sure your body is fully hydrated before taking niacin, i.e don't take it while dehydrated.
2. Work up to the desired dose. Start with a small dose, maybe 500 mg, and work up to 2,000 or 3,000 mg.
3. It is best not to take niacin on an empty stomach.
4. Take a baby aspirin 1/2 hour before taking niacin.
**** This is the obligatory consult your doctor warning. At large doses, niacin is more like a drug than a vitamin supplement. As with many drugs, there is a small possibility of liver damage. This should be monitored with periodic blood test.

Bayer Heart Health Advantage, 80 Caplets Review

Bayer Heart Health Advantage, 80 Caplets

Bayer's Heart Health Advantage supplement is a very good part of one's daily diet, since the Heart Health Advantage supplement decreases bad cholesterol in the GI tract, contains "phytosterol" and a chemical in some vegetables and nuts, and has the support of scientific research. Professors Lamarch, Mauger and Jones in the School of Dietics and Human Nutrion at McGill Univ. in Canada write that phytosterol "possesses substantial potential to reduce cardiovascular disease risk through its beneficial actions in modulation of lipid concentrations" [...]. Thus, Bayer's Heart Health Advantage is worth trying daily when trying to lower cholesterol.

Benecol Smart Chews, Caramel, 120-Count Soft Chews Review

Benecol Smart Chews, Caramel, 120-Count Soft Chews
Average Reviews:

Not wanting to resort to "drugs" to manage Cholesterol, I did some research on plant Stanols, and plant Sterols. They both seem to have the ability to lower the cholesterol in your blood. However, based on a Johns Hopkins health alert....plant sterols tend to lose their ability to lower cholesterol, and instead start to appear in the blood them selves. Where as plant STANOLS seem to stay active and continue to lower cholesterol. BENECOL is the only off the shelf item that contains stanols instead of sterols. The Benecol spread is good and tastes fine, but the caramel chews are portable so you can easily take them with you. I would recommend the chews to anyone who wants to keeps tabs on your cholesterol....they are reasonably inexpensive, taste good, and have STANOLS in them...and they are portable. I was able to lower my cholesterol by 80 points by consumming STANOLS and watching my intake of cholesterol....

Vitafusion Fiber Gummies Weight Management, 90-Count Bottle Review

Vitafusion Fiber Gummies Weight Management, 90-Count Bottle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Probably my new fave Vitafusion product. I've tried their multi Vites and the Vitamin D, and they all taste great. But I was wondering if the Fiber Vitafusion Fiber Gummies would taste funky. Nope. Taste just as yummy as the other VitaFusion products, but FIVE GRAMS OF FIBER for two gummies. Wow.
I normally get plenty of fiber, since I eat a lot of produce, whole grains, and legumes (mmm...beans...). But occasionally, there's a day I indulge in pizza or junk food and don't get my legumey or enough whole grain fiber. These fill that gap when I don't make it to 30 grams of fiber a day (my goal is no less than 25 and optimally 30+). I never have issues with irregularity, and I don't WANT issues with irregularity, so these are part of my fiber quest now.
So, yumsy. Though they don't tell you to specifically, I do recommend a glass of water or more when you take these to keep things moving nicely.
Each gummy has five calories. These do contain sucralose, green tea extract, coconut oil, and beeswax. So, anyone who has issues with those should avoid. Since gelatin is an ingredient (duh, gummies), these may not be Vegan-Friendly, so a heads up there.
Enjoy...

It took about 4 weeks before I noticed some relief from the sciatic pain (from 2 slipped discs) and the hip pain (from arthritis in both hips.) Relief started gradually. Now I am pain free from these conditions almost all the time, and when I occasionally do have pain, it is considerably lessened. I started with more than the recommended dosage, but now take three a day. I can walk distances again and am sleeping so much better. This is an incredible product.

I have been a diabetic for 17 years and have always had a VERY VERY hard time with my cholesterol. My triglycerides in January of 2009 was 753! OUCH!. I just had my 3 month review with my doctor and my triglycerides are down to 250! I have been taking this product faithfully since I received it in February. My doctor seems to think it is my diet, but I don't. I have been on so many different diets and nothing has compared to the drastic decrease in my triglycerides that Cholester Clear has given me. I can't wait until I see my doctor again! Thank you!

NOW FLUSH-FREE NIACIN (500 MG) DOUBLE STRENGTH - 90 Vcaps
Average Reviews:

I was recently prescribed Niacin supplements by my physician for high cholesterol. I've tried a number of other brands, but Now Food's Flush Free Niacin is so far the only brand I have tried that does not produce the "flush" symptoms resulting from high doses of Niacin. A number of other brands, most of which were far more expensive, that I tried used the wording "flush free" on their labels, but really did not deliver on their promises. Even at the lowest possible dose, most other brands were quite simply intolerable, even after giving myself several weeks to "get used" to them. This is the only Niacin supplement I have tried that caused NO side effects. Thanks to these supplements, my cholesterol levels have dropped back down to normal and I no longer need to take prescription medicines. The pills themselves are in easy to swallow capsules.
