(More customer reviews)Everyone in the family had Vitamin D tests (25-Hydroxy). Our levels were in the teens and single digits so the doctor prescribed a prescription 50,000 mg once a week gelcap. Only one member of the family took this and his level went from single digits to the 15 ng/mL (still very low).
The rest of the family took Pure Encapsulations Vit D3 5000IU and all our levels are above 32 ng/mL, in the normal range, in less than 2 months. Of course, I don't know if our health has greatly improved. There are some incredible claims about Vit D3. I can attest to only one: I don't feel as exhausted as before. If that is a placebo effect - it was worth the money. I know this is anecdotal evidence, but the lab numbers confirmed that, at the very least, this form of D3 is easily absorbed and stays in the blood long enough to be picked up by the phlebotomist.

(More customer reviews)I got these softgels because they were cheaper then another brand, and I wasn't disappointed with what I received. The expiration date on the bottle has plenty of time left - several years. The bottle says that it contains no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, sugar, starch, milk, lactose, gluten, wheat, yeast, or fish - sodium free.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol, the ingredient in this product) is the better form of Vitamin D. It is better absorbed then Vitamin D2.
The ingredients in the softgel contain gelatin, vegetable glycerin, purified water, and it also contains soybean oil. The softgels are pretty easy to swallow. The 5000IU dosage is on the higher side, but its good for me since my blood level of vitamin D is low. I can't see any immediate downside to this product versus the more popular name brand, although you should be aware that if you are allergic to soy then this might not be for you because of the soybean oil. It says to take one per day, but this can change depending on your specific needs.

It advises monthly blood tests to check for serum 25(OH)D in the danger level. I am happy to report that for way more than 99% of the population, 5,000 IU will bring you into the optimal range. This warning is the manufacturer's way of limiting legal liability in case something goes wrong, but it basically is safe. 5,000 IU typically brings a blood level of 15 ng/mL up to around 40 ng/mL. You could go three times that high and it would still be safe according to research done by Dr. Reinhold Vieth at the University of Toronto. As 5-HTP goes, this is good stuff and reasonably priced. It does seem to cause vivid dreams and it seems to have the effects it is supposed to. However, it should be noted that although you need take only 1-2 capsules for insomnia, the short half life of 5-HTP from "GRIFFONIA SEEDS" necessitates rather frequent dosing for depression and appetite suppression, usually 4x per day and attention needs to be paid to the timing of doses with other amino acids. Serotonin syndrome may also be an issue for some.
Whereas many important issues are not certain or resolved regarding 5-HTP dosage and usage, it does seem to do a lot of good when used appropriately. Naturally a lot more can be said and books have been written on 5-HTP. It is a product that must be used with considerable care and professional medical monitoring is advisable due to the serious conditions it is used for and its effects on human brain chemistry. [Depression, Obesity, Insomnia] Nevertheless after taking it for 3 years I can say that I have experienced no negative side effects. Also, I have noticed reduced cravings for sweets, less anxiety in social situations and have slept better than I ever have. There has also been no sign of 5-HTP being habit forming in my experience.
5-HTP WITH L-TYROSINE?
If you are considering using this product for anxiety or sociophobic disorders the same company [NOW] makes a 200mg dosage combined with the amino acid L-tyrosine. Many have found the addition of 250 mg of L-tyrosine to be most helpful and the product still retains all of its other characteristics.
PLEASE NOTE: For applications such as appetite control [which requires the largest dosage] dosages from 300-600 mg. were used in double-blind clinical trials, making these 200 mg. 5-Htp, 250 mg. L-Tyrosine capsules, more practical and relatively less expensive than the small capsule sizes offered.
